CBD or Cannabidiol is one of the most prominent cannabinoid compounds that are found in the Cannabis plant. It is known to offer a wide range of medicinal benefits which do not make you feel uneasy. It is also vital to boost bodily functions and help you lead a healthy and active lifestyle. It is available in the form of tinctures, capsules, vapes, topicals and edibles.
It is, nowadays, recommended by many doctors and physicians as it can cure many health problems. It does not harm the mental stability of the patient.
There are many ways to extract the oil from the plant and make CBD oil.CBD is derived from the hemp plant since it contains less of THC levels (0.3%) and more of CBD levels. The CO2 extraction method is used to derive CBD from the hemp plant. To isolate the individual compounds (CBD being one of them), the extracted oil needs to be distilled after extraction. The first step is a process called Winterization, followed by Short Path Distillation.
Winterization is the process to remove undesirable elements that were extracted from the plant, for example fats, waxes and lipids. This process is only needed when the oil was extracted at high pressure/high temperature (supercritical) because this intense extraction pulls everything from the plant, including material you don’t want in the final product. The extracted oil is effectively crude oil, which needs refining.
Once extracted, the mixture is combined with 200 proof alcohols and stirred vigorously until completely mixed. It’s then placed in a deep freezer overnight. In the morning, the mixture looks cloudy and is ready for filtration. One way to filter out the fats, etc. is to run it through a filter paper into an extraction jar. A common piece of equipment for this is a Buchner Funnel. Once it’s been filtered to satisfaction and the undesirable elements have been removed, it’s time to remove the alcohol. This is done using heat. The extraction is warmed and as its warmed, the alcohol evaporates since the boiling point of alcohol is lower than the oil. The removed alcohol can then be reused on a different batch of crude oil.
To further refine the extract, and to isolate the CBD, the oil goes through Short Path Distillation. This works in much the same way as Winterization in that the extract is heated and each compound is then separated because each one has a different boiling point. In this way, each compound is isolated and can be used by itself.
CBD is known to interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors of our body. It does not send a direct message to the brain, but it boosts the production of endocannabinoids in the human body by inhibiting enzymes that ideally break them down. It regulates several cognitive and behavioral functions and also interacts with the serotonin system that helps with addiction.
The human body has an endocanabinoid system (ECS), which works exactly like the CBD cannabinoid. It has CB1 and CB2 receptors.
CB1 receptors are located in the brain and throughout the body, while CB2 receptors are found mostly in the immune and gastrointestinal system; although CB2 receptors are also found in the brain, they are not expressed quite as densely as CB1 receptors. The endocannabinoid molecules act as chemical messengers to unite these receptors and instruct the body to perform certain functions that are vital for our body.
Phyto-cannabinoid is a family of natural complex chemicals found in cannabis and their main physiological activity relates to binding and activating several nervous receptors in the body. The most abundantly extracted phyto-cannabinoids from cannabis are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). While THC has a narrow therapeutic window, CBD has been identified for its analgesics, anti-inflammatory, and palliative properties. It is also inferred that the psychoactivity induced by THC is more adverse than its therapeutic effect so unless a correct dosage is identified, THC may become intolerable and ineffective. On the other hand, CBD works as an allosteric modulator that reduces psychoactivity due to THC and follows an alternate pharmacological profile to inhibit cannabinoid receptors. It may also be argued that when THC and CBD are inhaled, their bioavailability is higher than when ingested orally – they undergo extensive first-pass metabolism whereby lower doses of CBD are more therapeutic than THC.
Each and every product has their own advantages to health. CBD is an all-rounder in providing health benefits to its users.
Here are some reasons why CBD is beneficial to health:
- Treats anxiety and depression: A research on social anxiety conducted by Brazilian researchers saw that CBD reduced social anxiety by affecting the limbic and paralimbic areas of the brain. CBD can also treat depression. In these animal studies, CBD reduced the depression of mice. This is because of the activation of 5-HT1A receptors. You should consult your doctor before ingesting CBD. However, CBD is fast-acting with minimal risk of side-effects.
- CBD helps treat diabetes : The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (where CBD was discovered) has been finding ways to use CBD in diabetes management. CBD can treat inflammation. Inflammation has a role in developing insulin resistance.Type 2 diabetes is also cured by CBD. This includes sugar metabolism, strengthening of the immune system, improved heart function, and increased cell growth.
- It can relieve you from cigarette addiction : By vaping CBD, you can get rid of your smoking habit. Rather than vaping tobacco, vape CBD.A study done proved that those who took oral CBD in lieu of cigarettes did not experience cigarette cravings, even when brought with tobacco attentional bias (a picture of an ashtray, videos of others smoking, etc.). The participants didn’t smoke cigarettes for 12 hours before the study. CBD also targets the pleasure areas the way cigarettes do.
- Treats acne : Acne is one of the most common skin problems. CBD is known to treat it better than other products. Inflammation occurs when bacteria, oil, sebum, and dead skin cells clog your pores. This is why some zits are red, swollen, and painful.Since CBD is known to cure inflammation, it will take away the swollen and painful effects of acne as well. It prevents acne formation and reduces the amount of sebum in our pores.
- CBD relieves PTSD : Those people who suffer from PTSD experience lower levels of anandamide, which is essential to feel joy and happiness. CBD works as an anandamide replacement. More research is being conducted on this.
- It can treat Fibromyalgia Symptoms : Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder that causes a person to feel excruciating pain in his muscles and bones. Apart from drugs, there is no other treatment for it. So, many people are switching to CBD to cure the symptoms of Fibromyalgia, which include pain, inflammation, fatigue, insomnia, restlessness, anxiety, depression, and even restless leg syndrome. A study conducted in the year 2011 proved that CBD helped relieve fibromyalgia patients from all the mentioned symptoms.
- Reduces back pain : 80% of the population experiences back pain at some point in their lives. Back pain is caused due to many reasons, some of which include injuries or sitting for long periods of time. CBD helps reduce the discomfort, but it cannot cure back pain completely.
- Treats Crohn’s Disease : Cannabis is known to cure Crohn’s disease and many similar digestive issues. The research isn’t confirmed yet, but since CBD can alleviate pain, it helps the patient cope with the stomach ache caused due to Crohn’s Disease.
According to researchers, CBD interacts with the receptors in your brain and your immune system. These receptors are tiny proteins that are attached to your cells. They receive chemical signals from different stimuli and aid in cell response. In this manner, they help in managing pain and create an anti-inflammatory effect.
A 2016 study looked at the use of CBD in rats with arthritis. Researchers applied CBD gel to rats for four days in a row. They applied 0.6, 3.1, 6.2, and 62.3 milligrams per day. The researchers noted reduced inflammation and overall pain in the rats’ affected joints without side effects.
CBD requires more studies on how it works for pain management when it is concerned with humans.
Some studies have found that cannabis might help anxiety. There are many studies conducted on CBD and Marijuana for anxiety. Those interested in knowing about CBD should refer to the studies based on that product only. Although there are fewer studies on cannabidiol specifically, the preliminary research is promising.
A small 2010 study found that cannabidiol could reduce symptoms of social anxiety in people with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Brain scans of participants revealed changes in blood flow to the regions of the brain linked to feelings of anxiety.
In this study, cannabidiol not only made participants feel better but also changed the way their brains responded to anxiety.
A 2011 study also found that cannabidiol could reduce social anxiety. For that study, researchers looked specifically at cannabidiol to treat anxiety associated with public speaking.
Research published in 2014 found that CBD oil had anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects in an animal model.
A 2016 case study explored whether cannabidiol could reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety-provoked sleep disorder in a child with a history of trauma. Researchers found that cannabidiol reduced the child's anxiety and helped her sleep.
A 2014 research study found that appropriately dosed CBD oil had antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like effects. This study was performed on animal models with a variety of experiments, such as the forced swimming test (FST), elevated plus maze (EPM), and Vogel conflict test (VCT).
In 2015, an analysis showed that CBD continued to reduce stress and social anxiety. The study referred to CBD as, “a potential treatment for anxiety disorders.” These disorders might include SAD, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and generalized anxiety disorder.
And finally, this 2016 research studied the effectiveness of CBD specifically on PTSD and insomnia. What they found was that CBD significantly reduced PTSD induced anxiety and aided in a healthy sleep pattern.
The cannabinoids produced in our body aid in regulation of mood, pain, sleep and appetite. These substances exert their actions by binding to specific points of brain cells called the receptors through which they potentiate the actions of a substance called serotonin which acts to improve mood and reduce stress levels. Serotonin also acts by binding to its receptors in brain cells. When these chemical substances bind to their respective receptors, they trigger a series of events within each brain cell stimulating processes that improve mood and stress control.
CBD can be used to tackle skin infections that are caused due to many factors, including immune system dysfunction.
The researchers tested CBD against a wide variety of bacteria, ''including bacteria that have become resistant to the most commonly used antibiotics," says Mark Blaskovich, PhD, senior research officer at the Centre for Superbug Solutions at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland in Australia.
The development is important, as antibiotic resistance is reaching dangerously high levels, according to the World Health Organization.
CBD is a non-psychoactive compound taken from cannabis and hemp; it does not produce the high that regular marijuana does. To date, the FDA has only approved CBD for treating rare and severe forms of seizure, although it is promoted for many other health benefits.
Blaskovich presented the research Sunday at the American Society for Microbiology annual meeting. The research includes work in test tubes and animal models. Research presented at meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
"The first thing we looked at is CBD's ability to kill bacteria," he says. "In every case, CBD had a very similar potency to that of common antibiotics."
The researchers tested the CBD against some strains of staphylococcus, which cause skin infections, and streptococcus, which cause strep throat.
They compared how effective CBD was compared to common antibiotics, such as vancomycin and daptomycin. "We looked at how quickly the CBD killed the bacteria. It's quite fast, within 3 hours, which is pretty good. Vancomycin (Vancocin) kills over 6 to 8 hours."
The CBD also disrupted the biofilm, the layer of ''goop'' around bacteria that makes it more difficult for the antibiotic to penetrate and kill.
Finally, the lab studies showed that "CBD is much less likely to cause resistance than the existing antibiotics," Blaskovich says.
The research is in its early stages. But the results are promising.
Studies also reveal that CBD prevented the bacteria from forming a biofilm and weakened their ability to form a resistance.
Studies have demonstrated that CBD is antioxidant, analgesic (pain-killer), and antibacterial, but from a skincare perspective, its anti-inflammatory powers are its #1 talent. “The skin’s cannabinoid receptors, which CBD interacts with, help regulate pain and itching,” says NYC dermatologist Dendy Engelman. That’s a big deal, since many skin issues, from breakouts to signs of aging, are fueled by inflammation in the first place.
And science supports its efficacy in this capacity: research shows that CBD may treat all kinds of skin problems, including chronic conditions. A study finding that CBD slows overproduction of skin cells signals promise for psoriasis; its modulation of inflammatory markers made it an effective treatment for eczema in another study. Engelman says CBD may even turn out to be a “natural remedy for acne lesions.” One recent study found that it helped suppress breakouts by regulating oil production.
CBD is a non-psychoactive compound. No matter how much CBD you consume, you will not feel intoxicated or “high.” CBD has also been found to quell nauseous feelings and prevent vomiting.
Research suggests that there is a direct link between your body’s endocannabinoid and the areas of the brain that control nausea and vomiting. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) was first discovered in the 1960s and exists in all mammals. The ECS consists of a series of cell receptors that accept only cannabinoids. CBD is one of the cannabinoids that interact with these receptors to curb the sensation of vomiting and nausea.
A common cause of insomnia is anxiety and stress. CBD helps to regulate cortisol, a stress hormone, which has a significant impact on non-REM sleep cycles. A large case series review found that CBD is beneficial for anxiety-related disorders and an increase in sleep quality.
CBD also helps reduce pain-induced sleeplessness by working on the symptoms themselves rather than providing a sedative effect like many sleep-aids.
Studies show that CBD is a promising treatment for movement disorders, helping to reduce tremors and hypermotility in Parkinson’s disease patients. By reducing muscle tremors, CBD helps insomnia in patients with movement disorders like Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease.
For those who suffer from REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), marked by restlessness and increased nightmares, a good night’s rest is nothing but a dream. Patients were treated with CBD and experienced an improvement in their quality of sleep.
Sleep disorders can be a result of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), resulting in sleep disturbances and REM cycle issues. An increasing number of research studies indicate the effectiveness of using CBD oil for sleep issues related to PTSD. CBD helps to relieve anxiety related to PTSD, which reduces anxiety-induced REM sleep disturbances.
