The passing of 2018 Farm Bill clears the air on the legal status of CBD while enabling U.S. farmers to grow hemp; however, a few regulatory things remain the same
The Congress passed an extensive agriculture bill on Wednesday to make the CBD (cannabidiol) legal at the federal level as one of the hemp’s byproducts. Well, it’s no less than the good news for all the CBD users who regularly use or may wish to use in the future and reap the medical benefits without any psychoactive effect. This gesture would open doors for more CBD infused products in the market for consumers to use while allowing the farmers to grow industrial hemp legally..
Even though the consumers have been able to buy and use CBD products in almost 47 states under permission, there have been legal limitations on the federal level. It is because of the Drug Enforcement Agency had earlier classified CBD as a ‘Schedule I’ controlled substance, considering that it doesn’t provide any medicinal benefit and can be addictive like other drugs such as heroin and LSD.
However, the time has now. There are many of the medical experts and the general public believing that CBD has certain potential benefits that assist in maintaining an optimum health while combating certain medical conditions. The best example proving the truth about CBD is that helps in reducing the frequency of seizures in those who were suffering from two forms of devastating epilepsy. Epidiolex is the first FDA approved CBD infused drug that was launched this year.
One can find more than hundred CBD products online and in retail stores that include tincture oils, gummies, sprays, bath bombs, and even beverages. The preliminary research experts suggest that CBD possesses health improving properties such as anti-inflammatory, anti- anxiety, and anti-depression.
The entire 2018 Farm Bill comprises the programs at an estimated cost of $876 billion for over 10 years. It further touches almost complete aspect of food, farming, and production in the United States. This bill was passed by the Senate on Tuesday. Speaking about the next action, the bill would reach President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it.
This bill further allows every state to make a decision for them whether they wish to permit the sales of CBD products extracted from hemp within the borders. It will be a game changer in the world where marijuana is defined in a Controlled Substances Act..
What Is Hemp?
It is one of the types of Cannabis and can be industrially grown to extract high CBD and low THC content for a medical purpose. Hemp is considered to be one of the oldest crops cultivated having a wide history in the U.S. Other than the CBD, hemp is highly used in the production of several consumer goods, such as paper, rope, fiber, textiles and even bio-fuel.
CBD Still Faces FDA Scrutiny
Although production of hemp can be a great boon for the U.S. farmers, the legality of CBD may still go through some hurdles. From 2015, the FDA has eventually pulled down dozens of CBD products selling companies. And now the FDA has approved selling Epidiolex containing a high amount of CBD on prescription.
According to the 2018 data:-
- 9 States have legalized the use of marijuana and hemp for medicinal and recreational use.
- Colorado, Alaska, California, Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, Nevada, Washington and Oregon.
- 46 states, including those listed above have legalized CBD on prescription for medicinal use.
